Nissan Motor has announced a major overhaul of its global strategy, focusing on simplifying its vehicle lineup while accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) driving technology.
The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen profitability and reposition the company in an increasingly competitive automotive market.
Streamlining the Vehicle Lineup
Nissan plans to reduce its global model range from 56 vehicles to 45, removing underperforming models and concentrating on more profitable and high-demand segments.
This streamlined approach aims to create a more efficient portfolio while improving brand clarity and operational performance.
Expanding AI Driving Capabilities
A key pillar of Nissan’s strategy is the widespread deployment of AI-based driving systems. The company aims to integrate AI technology into up to 90% of its vehicles over time.
These systems are expected to enhance:
- Driver assistance and safety
- Autonomous driving capabilities
- Real-time decision-making on the road
Nissan is also working with partners like Uber Technologies and Wayve to develop robotaxi solutions, with a pilot program planned in Tokyo by 2026.
New Hybrid and Electric Models
As part of its product refresh, CEO Ivan Espinosa introduced:
- A hybrid version of the Rogue SUV (known as X-Trail in Japan)
- A fully electric version of the Juke
These additions reflect Nissan’s commitment to expanding both hybrid and electric vehicle offerings in response to global demand for cleaner mobility.
Ambitious Global Sales Targets
Looking ahead, Nissan aims to achieve:
- 1 million annual vehicle sales in both the United States and China by 2030
- 550,000 annual sales in Japan
To support these goals, the company plans to increase local production in the U.S. to around 80%, up from approximately 60% today.
Restructuring and Cost Efficiency
The transformation is part of a wider turnaround plan that includes:
- Reducing global manufacturing capacity
- Cutting its workforce by around 15%
- Improving operational efficiency
Nissan also intends to revitalize its luxury brand, Infiniti, with new product launches in the coming years.
Expanding Global Reach
In China, Nissan is strengthening its export strategy by shipping vehicles such as:
- The N7 electric sedan to Latin America and ASEAN markets
- The Frontier Pro pickup truck to the Middle East
Additionally, the company plans to introduce a new compact car series in Japan starting in 2028 and roll out advanced autonomous features in upcoming models like the Elgrand minivan.
A New Direction for Nissan
Nissan’s latest strategy signals a shift toward innovation, efficiency, and AI-driven mobility. By focusing on fewer models and smarter technology, the automaker aims to regain momentum and compete more effectively with rivals such as Toyota Motor Corporation and Honda Motor.
If executed successfully, this transformation could position Nissan as a stronger player in the future of intelligent and sustainable transportation.
